Are you ready for Computational Thinking activity? This week, it’s the Computational Thinking Approach to Learning Language.
50 minutes
7-10 year olds
If you are interested in helping your child to learn a new word. Why don’t you try computational thinking approach? Help them to try predicting the meaning of new words without looking up the dictionary. List of words Replay Restart Return Remake Remix
Your child does not have to know every single word.
However, he/she can guess new word if he/she decompose unknown word in a smaller pieces.
For this reason, he/she is able to manage the smaller piece to predict words easily.
Start finding some common words and easy to see around everyday.
Need to practice before using your own words?
Let’s practice! For example, write these three words and find the meaning of them.
Three words should have the same prefix.
A prefix is the root of a word. Try restart, return, and/or remix!
When you decompose each word, explain your child explicitly the meaning of each word and the meaning of prefix.
In this way, it is easier him/her to recognize pattern recognition.
Re-start
Re-turn
Re-mix
Let him come up with new words, find some common words, and/or try to use words that you have seen around everyday.
Each word should have same prefix.
For example, restart, return, and remix has the same prefix.
Time to debrief.
Listen your child’s new words.
Observe his/her way to understand and predict the meaning of words explicitly.
Doctorate in Education
Originally from Turkey, then Pittsburgh, now California
I got my doctorate in educating kids how to code, and how to think computationally so they can thrive in STEM. I have been researching how Offline Activities -- where kids aren't in front of a screen, but are playing in the real world -- can help kids get core concepts of coding.
This activity helps your child to learn news words. Additionally, your child will be able to explore prefixes.
