Coding can foster children’s ability to reason systematically, work collaboratively, and think creatively. If you have a young child, you might want to teach them how to code with the Hello Ruby program — including an app, a book, and other resources.

This inspiring TED talk from Linda Liukas, the author of Hello Ruby, talks through how coding can play an important role in kids’ and girls’ development.

Ruby is a 6 year-old girl who explores programming along with her close friends. The programming happens through playing with visual representation. It is not arcane, difficult, or text-based.

For example, Ruby learns how to loop, counter loop, by coming to understand loops and sequence with daily life experiences. Like, dancing while standing with a foot up — as a way to learn about loops. The app and book focus on building this computational understanding, and not just writing code.
