How can you get a child to be passionate about coding? One way is to show them how they can use it to express their intangible ideas on the tangible computer screen.

This influential TED talk is from Professor Mitchel Resnick. He is Professor of Learning Research and Director of the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab.

In the talk, Professor Resnick suggests that we should make coding a priority for children’s education. Not only does starting them early help them learn more programming languages (like Scratch). It also empowers them to create other terrific things:

  • games
  • animated stories
  • online news shows
  • book reports
  • greeting cards
  • music videos
  • science projects
  • tutorials
  • simulations
  • sensor-driven art and music

While children create and design projects, those who learn coding at an earlier age are better at problem solving, decision-making, creative thinking, and working collaboratively.

Our favorite way for kids to learn coding? We recommend the free, powerful Scratch coding platform.
